<p>The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> is a small <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/eyepiece/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with eyepiece">eyepiece</a>/viewfinder unit that converts your telephoto lens to a <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/spotting-scope/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with spotting scope">spotting scope</a>. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=nikon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Nikon</a> made similar units back in the day that cost a fortune and never sold well, so I was slightly skeptical about the quality of the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> as it&#8217;ll only set me back $179.00. Was the eyepiece worth the modest price tag?</p>
<p><span id="more-3523"></span></p>
<p>Around spring last year I found myself selling my binoculars (10&#215;50) because I seldom used them and besides the <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/magnification/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with magnification">magnification</a> was only equivalent to a 500mm lens. That meant they had less <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/magnification/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with magnification">magnification</a> than the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sigma&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Sigma</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sigma+300-800&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">300-800mm F5.6</a> I always bring with me. Sure they are faster in use but I often put my tripod rig down before grabbing the <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/binos/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with binos">binos</a> so I might as well be using this instead. I was thinking about buying another pair with higher magnification but couldn&#8217;t really justify the price for a pair of 12 x 50 Swarovski&#8217;s.<br />
Forgetting about the idea my I used my <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sigma&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Sigma</a> as ever before. &#8211; I had the opportunity to try a decent spotting scope and you just can&#8217;t help fall in the magnification (up to 80x) so I again dreamed about focal length past 1600mm&#8217;s (which a 2x teleconverter gives me). Now you might argue that I could just buy a spotting scope but that would require me to carry yet another tripod as well as a somewhat lengthy spotting scope.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Lens2scope-10mm-1.4-eyepiece-1.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3527" title="Lens2scope-10mm-1.4-eyepiece-1" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Lens2scope-10mm-1.4-eyepiece-1.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>As I was browsing the net I stumbled upon the name <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/lens2scope/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Lens2scope">Lens2scope</a> and searched high and low for a <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/review/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with review">review</a> of their product and couldn&#8217;t really track one down. So after a couple of mails between their excellent sales support and I the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> landed on my door step.</p>
<p>The unit itself is quite small and nimble. The build quality is decent although it&#8217;s made mostly of plastic. The eyepiece features a rubber piece of somewhat stiff character, despite this it can bend and is pretty good in use. I would have wished for a softer type of rubber and it can feel like you&#8217;ll be getting your eye sucked out, oh well perhaps not that extreme but you get the point. It also feature a lens tripod foot (removable) that takes the standard 3/8&#8243; bolt suitable for close to any type of support you own.  The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> comes in two configurations as well as colors. You have a direct through the lens version or an angled one like to one I got. It&#8217;s an entirely a personal preference and I bought the angled one for ease of operations.<br />
The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> is also available in the well known <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> off-white so it&#8217;ll match the colors of your <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> lenses.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Lens2scope-10mm-4.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3537" title="Lens2scope-10mm-4" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Lens2scope-10mm-4.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="613" /></a></p>
<p>I created a scene where I placed a stuffed toy animal (You might know him the from excellent Lion King) and in order to test how much magnification the setup gives me I was to shoot a couple of frames with the 1D and slap on the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> to observe the difference. I do not know how far it was from the setup but an estimate would be more than 10 but less than 15 meters. Highly unscientific but thats how I like it <img src='http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Before setting up this scene I actually tried the unit on my <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/400mm-f5-6/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with 400mm F5.6">400mm F5.6</a> L lens and was positively surprised. The magnification is mind-blowing compared to the lens on the camera and the sharpness as well as contrast etc. was WAY beyond was I was expecting of the unit. With this combination I would say it&#8217;ll perform as well as any $500.00 binoculars perhaps with better corner sharpness. That just shows what high quality well regarded telephoto lenses are made of. Be wary of the dept of field as you still operating with a 35mm lens so you&#8217;ll get a creamy bokeh in front and behind the subject your looking at. That means focus IS critical.</p>
<p>So with twice the focal length of the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> 400mm F5.6 L I took a shot with the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sigma&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Sigma</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sigma+300-800&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">300-800mm F5.6</a> and switched to the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a>. The manufacturer claims you&#8217;ll get up 1/10X the focal length of the lens mounted when mounted on a 35mm camera and up to 25x times the one you find on a macro lens if you use such. A claim which I found truth too.<br />
Now without getting to scientific I found the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> to give me roughly the same magnification as when I&#8217;m looking on the screen on the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> 7D with live-view and 5x magnification. A quick calculation would be : 800mm x 1.6 (crop factor) x 5 (live-view magnification) = 6400mm &#8211; Yes that&#8217;s 6400mm!!</p>
<p>How does that fair in the real world. Look down and you&#8217;ll see two frame filling shots. Bare in mind the  <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a> will fill most of your vision with one eye and the image is sharp, contrasty and pleasant to look at. Note it wasn&#8217;t easy to shoot the view that the eyepiece offered with the point and shoot so final view comes out sharper than what I captured as well as without the blue tint in the bottom.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Lens2scope-10mm-3.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3538" title="Lens2scope-10mm-3" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/Lens2scope-10mm-3.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="345" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion<br />
</strong>You probably guessed it by now but I&#8217;m loving the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a>. It&#8217;s small and nimble, offers of a good, clear and bright image with an amazing focal length in a small package for a very low pricetag. So if your looking to purchase a spotting scope and already own a high-end telephoto lens ditch the scope and grab the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.lens2scope.com/product.html">Lens2scope 10mm 1:4 eyepiece</a>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m off spotting eagles from miles away.</p>

The reputation that comes with this lens is second to none. Seldom have I heard works spoken that was of a negative consensus when the conversation steered towards this wide angle beast.<span id="more-3488"></span>*Note : After returning the lens I accidentally deleted my shots of the Tokina <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=tokina+11-16mm&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&BI=7610&KBID=8136">11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX</a> so you have to settle for a sample image supplied by the manufacturer.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/371.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3424" title="Last light on the sand banks" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/371.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong I really like large cameras mostly due to build quality and handling but also due to the larger sensor. In recent years leading manufactures have been pushing the smaller form factor and with that also the smaller sensor size. I&#8217;m aware large is still king but with smaller sensor camera of today (D7000, 7D or similar) lens manufactures have a golden opportunity to create smaller lenses with stellar performance. For the consumer smaller also means less expensive.</p>
<p>Among the newest generation of ultra wide angle lenses is the Tokina <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=tokina+11-16mm&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&BI=7610&KBID=8136">11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX</a>.<br />
What surprised me at first is, especially when comparing it at the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8, is the size. It&#8217;s much smaller than I expected being a f/2.8 lens. It takes the relatively inexpensive 77mm filter (the 16-28 doesn&#8217;t) and it fits in most photo bags. The fast F/2.8 aperture enables photojournalist and other low light explores to capture wide angle shots in very dim light.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/372.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3429" title="Last light on the Sand Banks 2" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/372.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="614" /></a></p>
<p>The lens features a focus ring as well as a zoom ring. The zoom ring was a little too small for my taste but overall well damped. The lens also feature full-time manual focus override which essentially functions by pushing the focus ring towards the camera body and you&#8217;re manually focusing. A solution similar to many macro lenses and it works great. Nor perhaps the most important thing for a <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/wide-angle-lens/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with wide angle lens">wide angle lens</a> is focus speed which is okay. The motor isn&#8217;t that fastest on the block but overall decent.</p>
<p>When is comes to the key essential of almost any lenses, the sharpness category, the Tokina manages to impress here as well. Wide open its reasonably sharp with low aberrations. There a little distortion at 11mm but less than what you might expect. You might want to stop down the lens a notch or two for the greatest performance but I you are like me using the lens for <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/landscape/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Landscape">landscape</a> photography you&#8217;ll likely use much smaller apertures where the lens is close to perfect!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/373.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3433" title="Last light on the Sand Banks 3" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/373.jpg" alt="" width="639" height="900" /></a></p>
<p>Against the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> 10-22 is fares very well. Similar in sharpness and contrast but with a lower distortion. The build quality fell much more sturdy. Unfortunately I haven&#8217;t had the pleasure reviewing the widest kid on the block the ultra wide <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sigma&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Sigma</a> 8-16mm but I&#8217;m convinced it&#8217;ll fare quite well.</p>
<p>One thing I did notice was lens flare which even without filters was slightly disappointing. Even without the suns close to the frame I could find a lens flare or two. Note that it is difficult to make a super wide angle lens in a compact format with a small lens hood without getting some kind of flare in the frame.</p>

</a></p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong><br />
The Tokina <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=tokina+11-16mm&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&BI=7610&KBID=8136">11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX</a> is a great Pro-grade lens for the crop camera. Ultra wide angle with low distortion and good to great sharpness throughout the zoom range. The focus motor could be faster as well as I like lensflare to be reduced but overall very impressive and recommendable.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong it&#8217;s not like I haven&#8217;t had a chance to review one or another but I&#8217;m not  too big of a fan of the <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/point-and-shoot-camera/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with point and shoot camera">point and shoot camera</a>. &#8211; Not so much because of their often inferior image quality or their loud flashy exterior but because they lack manual adjustment features. The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822129-REG/Ricoh_175723_GR_DIGITAL_IV_Digital.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">Gr Digital IV</a> is in a whole other ballpark.<span id="more-3455"></span>At first glance the camera looks small, nimble and serious. The build quality is second to none &#8211; The body is in fact so well made it makes a reasonable midrange camera like the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> 7D feel plastic and cheep. The greatest way to describe the build quality would probably be a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> 1D series body just a whole lot lighter.</p>
<p>The button layout underlines the <a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/tag/professional-quality/" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with professional quality">professional quality</a>. In fact the button layout is quite similar to a DSLR with both a wheel (used to control aperture / shutter speed or similar)  and a thumb-rocker button (which also can control aperture and so on) &#8211; The thumb button also doubles as a quick menu button which again can be customized with a number of features, such as bracketing, ISO or a number of other features. The mode selector wheel is quick in use and comes with a lock button you need to press in order to adjust to the wheel. Among other customizable button are also 2 FN button in which you can assign ISO and other features. A thing you should expect from a professional graded camera.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/367.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3406" title="dunes end" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/367.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="426" /></a></p>
<p>Besides all the aforementioned features the camera is backed up by a 3&#8243; screen with VGA resolution. The screen is great in use, very easy to see and adjustable in brightness. The camera does not come with a viewfinder but in order to keep the size down chances are you won&#8217;t miss it.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t speak of the screen without mentioning the menu. At first glance you&#8217;ll probably be overwhelmed with the amount a features they put into this camera. Imagine a midrange DSLR menu system with all the FN options on the main menu screen. It takes a while to figure out what does what, but since the camera probably comes in your language the learning curve isn&#8217;t that steep.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m a manual exposure guy so I never resort to the Aperture Priority program or any other program for that mater. And to my surprise I could configure the camera to work and function similar to my <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> DSLRs. That means controlling shutter speed on the index finger wheel and the aperture on the thumb-rocker. In fact I felt right at home.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/368.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3412" title="piece of land" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/368.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="499" /></a></p>
<p>If you read my previous review of the excellent <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/760754-REG/Ricoh_170383_GXR_Body.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">GXR</a> you&#8217;ll find the two bodies are quite similar which is a very good thing. The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/760754-REG/Ricoh_170383_GXR_Body.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">GXR</a> is a little bit bigger but overall the build quality and menu system is much alike and features much of the same user options. Imagine the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/760754-REG/Ricoh_170383_GXR_Body.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">GXR</a> with a small sensor and a fast F1.9 lens.</p>
<p>Speaking of lens the 28mm F1.9 is very good. It&#8217;s remarkable sharp wide open and gains only slightly stopping. Being a prime lens it&#8217;s easier to strive for a perfect optical quality and while not quite there (no lens is) it&#8217;s pretty darn good. I didn&#8217;t notice much distortion and only a slight vignetting at F1.9. The large F1.9 aperture also allow you to shot in locations more dim than you might expect even without cranking to ISO up to 3200.</p>
<p>Although the  <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822129-REG/Ricoh_175723_GR_DIGITAL_IV_Digital.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">Gr Digital IV</a> features a somewhat small 1/1.7&#8243; sensor ISO performance is quite good much better than what I expected. I would go as far as saying ISO 1600 is perfectly usable and ISO 3200 is only as a last resort. That being said I seldom use higher ISO as I always bring a tripod to what I shoot but for a photo journalist it&#8217;s good news.</p>
<p>With that being said I wish I had the lens hood as well as adapter with me as the lens could benefit from the hood in situations where the sun was close to the edge or the frame. I found colors shifting a little the closer you got to the sun which the lens hood probably could have prevented. Both are available as an accessory.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/375.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3445" title="Dunes´ end 2" src="http://www.tobiashjorth.com/wp-content/uploads/375.jpg" alt="" width="920" height="614" /></a></p>

<p><strong>Conclusion<br />
</strong>I found myself liking the small format that is the  <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822129-REG/Ricoh_175723_GR_DIGITAL_IV_Digital.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">Gr Digital IV</a>, more and more as days passed by. I&#8217;m deeply impressed by the essential quality of the camera whether it being build  or image quality. In the period I had the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822129-REG/Ricoh_175723_GR_DIGITAL_IV_Digital.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">Gr Digital IV</a> I for review I often choose to bring this small camera with me as a supplement to my <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=canon&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Canon</a> 1D rather than bringing the 7D as well.<br />
I would have liked the lens hood to be included from get go but that&#8217;s a very small nit. The one thing I could put my finger on would be VGA video. In these days of HD devices everywhere I wonder why <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> didn&#8217;t include this in the overall great <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Ricoh&N=0&BI=7610&KBID=8136">Ricoh</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822129-REG/Ricoh_175723_GR_DIGITAL_IV_Digital.html/BI/7610/KBID/8136">Gr Digital IV</a>. Either way highly recommend for everyone looking for a supplement to their DSLR or as a serious number 1 compact camera.</p>
